Find Out How To Avoid The Horror Stories Below

The Bordetella Vaccine, or Kennel Cough Vaccine, is usually given to canine puppies many times throughout the first year in a series of numerous shots, and then yearly as a booster.

Although it is given so frequently, the bordetalla shot is often unnecessary. Many vets are becoming aware of the need to only administer this vaccine on a case to case basis, and only recommending it to dogs that are frequently around a large number of dogs, as in the case of show dogs.

The reason veterinarians are becoming hesitant to administer such a vaccine is the substantial evidence showing it can cause mild to extreme adverse reactions in your pet.

The bordetella vaccine side effects can include soreness and a lump at the injection site, hives, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, lameness, or even death.

The vaccine for kennel cough is usually given in a set of shots nicknamed “cocktail” vaccines, where many different viruses are being injected, easily over-stimulating your dog’s immune system where it cannot possibly overcome the onslaught of so many diseases all at once.

This is why many dogs have these negative reactions to the vaccines. Their bodies just cannot handle creating all the antibodies at once, especially if they are under one year or a small breed.

Even if your dog does not show any side-effects to the bordetella vaccination, it may not prevent him from contracting the illness.

Fever, steroids, disease, or maternal antibodies can prevent your dog’s ability to make the proper immune blockers that the kennel cough shot is designed to produce.

So, you could be exposing your pet’s immune system to a high stress situation, when the shot itself may not even be effective.

Additionally, if the kennel cough vaccines are given too close together, vaccines can be made ineffective by earlier shots; given too far apart, the immune response will not be properly activated.

Also, kennel cough vaccinations given to very young puppies (under six weeks of age) could prove to be useless, as their immune system may not have the “memory” quality to sustain the antibodies.

Even if your dog happens to contract kennel cough, the symptoms are mild and compared to the side-effects of the vaccine, may be easier for you and your pet to handle physically and emotionally.

Kennel cough symptoms can include a dry cough and tracheal irritation that lasts from seven to ten days, but their general state of health and happiness is usually unaffected.

They typically show no loss of appetite or rise in temperature either, which is more than you can say for the kennel cough vaccination itself. The vast majority of infected canines will recover on their own with no medication in a very short period.

If the cough seems persistent or annoying to the dog, there are many herbal cough remedies that have no side-effects for your little guy or gal, and are much more cost effective than the vaccine, which may not protect the canine in the first place.

Another huge down side with ALL vaccinations is the fact that there is a high concentration of so-called “modified live” virus particles.

By injecting your pet with these viruses and the toxic chemical mixture, you are actually facilitating the onset of a full blown viral attack. This means if your pet was exposed to a highly contagious virus or bacteria then you are actually giving him a strong dose which can easily lead to full-blown symptoms.

We hear this story almost daily, where animals were completely healthy, they get vaccinated and within a couple of days the animal is extremely sick and is under attack. STOP PRESS: Vaccinations can kill your pet in as little as five hours – see The Worst Thing You Can Do If Your Dog Has Been Exposed To Parvo for a very scary example from one of our customers.

Not only can vaccines give an animal any number of diseases that they are meant to protect him from, they typically cause chronic inflammation which is now known as the leading cause of cancer.

Clearly, the vaccinations are not working and are causing far-reaching life-threatening problems. This is why we do not recommend giving any vaccines to your pets. Please read this short article on the dangers of vaccinations.

If your dog or cat does happen to have the standard kennel cough symptoms and you are looking for a safe organic kennel cough treatment and you would like to try treating kennel cough at home, then please see our home remedies for kennel cough.

If your pet has been affected by a recent vaccination, then we highly recommend doing a detox to help flush out all those toxic chemicals.

Once that is done, we also encourage you to do like we do with our own dogs, and give your pets a daily maintenance dose every single day, to help keep them healthy.

Our Daily Maintenance Kit will let you administer both of these treatments, using 100% natural, chemical-free products (i.e. there will be no side-effects).

The other piece of the jigsaw is their food, and the only food we will use with our own dogs is Triumph Dog Food. Check out the site, and make sure you watch our video on the home page – you will probably be shocked at what you may unknowingly be feeding your animals!

    Amanda,

We are sorry to hear about your puppy.

As you can see from other people who’ve posted their experience on this page, it is not an uncommon problem, and although your vet probably won’t admit it, this sounds very much like a vaccine reaction (which is hardly surprising when you see what junk they put in these products).

What we would recommend is, firstly, giving him a detox, to help flush out the chemicals from his body. Our Daily Maintenance Kit will deal with that.

Secondly, make sure you feed him a high-quality dog food (i.e. not the sort of thing you’ll find at most supermarkets). The only food we feed our dogs is called Triumph – it’s chemical-free and very nutritious, and it doesn’t contain all of the fillers and crap they put in most dog foods (make sure you watch the video on the home page).

  2. Sarah says:

Our dog has experienced terrible seizures both times he has received the Bordatella vaccine- each time about a day after receiving the vaccine. He has never had a seizure outside of these two incidences.

  3. Rae and Mark says:

    Sarah,

Thanks for sharing that – it may well help other pet owners recognise some of the many possible adverse effects of vaccinations.

This is why we believe in doing both pre- and post-vaccination administration of herbal detox products, to help prepare your pet for the sudden influx of nasty chemicals that are contained in the shots, and to help flush those chemicals out again afterwards.

You’ll find a couple of detox kits (the Daily Maintenance Kit and the top-of-the-range Mega Detox Kit) on the following page: http://www.KennelCoughTreatment.org/buy-kennel-cough-treatment

I am so disappointed to see all of the negative comments about Vets. and practices. What you may not know is that they are trying to rotate vacines to counter act these reactions people are complaining about. A good vet always has the best interest of the pet in mind. I worked at a vet clinic for nine years and my doctors never recomended a vaccine that was not necessary for a pets well being. As to the Bordetella vaccine I noticed no one mentioned the nasal form of the vaccine. This has become the favored form of administration it does not have the side effects of the injectable form, is quicker to take affect, and is less traumatic to the pet than a shot.
Also as a person who was born with bronchitis I have been suseptiable to the infection all my life. But since working at the clinic and receiving a secondary dose of the vaccine from nasal form of the vaccine I have not had a case of bronchitis in 12 years.
Lastly, people really need to talk to their Vets. and let them know your pets situation and like any patient going to the doctor ask plenty of questions. Get brochures on the vaccines that are recommended, know the diseases they are to protect your pet from.
In conclusion, we all love our pets and think of them as members of the family. So we want what is best for them. In order to do this we need to well informed pet owners don’t get your info from one of these sites they are helpful but you need to get your info from the brochures that the drug reps. leave with vets. also. Do research, ask questions, and communicate with your vet. They want your pet to be healthy also.

  5. Rae and Mark says:

    Kim,

If you really believe that you’re going to get the truth from drug reps, then good luck to you!

Remember, follow the money and then decide whether these companies have your best interests at heart?

  6. Kathleen says:

Thank you for this article. My issue is that all kennels “require” the shots. I like the Titre test but it’s $98 and when I was working this wasn’t an issue. Now for Christmas I have to board my 11.5 yr GSP and looking at Tractor Supply for the required vacs bc they are less than $10ea there. I don’t want to give them to her at all but I can’t bring my dog with me to this family members home, unfortunately. Any suggestions? I don’t have a friend who lives close enough to care for her and they have their own holiday events.

  7. Rae and Mark says:

    Kathleen,

We know this can be difficult, so first of all, we’d like to point you to another of our articles on this site: http://www.kennelcoughtreatment.org/dog-friendly-hotels-and-other-ways-to-avoid-having-to-vaccinate-your-pet

Also, if you do want to use a pet-sitting service, then both companies do have specials at the moment, although we have no idea how long they’re valid for:

  8. marvin says:

my dog is due a bordatella vac, but after reading this he wont get it, i would like to tell all that i was giving my pet flea pills, he started having seizuers every 3 months, we noticed after giving him flea pills every three months was when he had seizuers, we stopped the pills and walla the seizuers went away.

  9. Rae and Mark says:

    Marvin,

    Thanks for the feedback.

As for the flea pills, then as we have said elsewhere, all chemical-based products can cause all manner of side-effects. You might like to read our review of what we consider the best natural flea remedy for dogs (and cats) on the market, TripleSure (and what that we use on our own dogs): http://www.MyOrganicDoggie.com/health/natural-flea-remedies-for-dogs-and-cats

  10. Laurie says:

OMG – Both my min. schnauzers (age 5 and 6.5 yrs) were boarded at the SFSPCA. Very fancy SPCA and I felt very comfortable boarding them there TOGETHER for 7 days. I had an emergency trip to take so they both got Bordetella nasal vaccines 2 days before boarding. I picked them up on the 7th day. Both were calmly happy to see me, which I thought might be just due to the boarding experience. Both have extreme dark watery diarrhea and vomiting for several days. I call my vet and we agreed to treat with white rice/lean and a small amount of lean cooked hamburger and then bring them in 3 days if I see no recovery. One dog has recovered about 60%. The other dog has not recovered at all. They both go to my regular vet in A.M. Something happened at the SPCA, because I found out later that one dog (maybe both?) was having diarreha while in their care, but no one told me when I picked them up. They had ‘healthy’ appetites and perfect stools before they went in… is it at all possible that the bordetella had anything to do with this? Tutzie has lost 1 pound since I boarded them on 2/9 – today is 2/20.

  11. Rae and Mark says:

    Laurie,

We’re sorry to hear about your Miniature Schnauzers.

Sadly, in our experience, it’s perfectly possible (and even probable) that it was the Bordetella shots that caused their problems. Of course, your vet will deny this, as will the manufacturers, but if you’ve already read other people’s stories on this page, then you’ll see that you’re not alone.

In terms of what we’d suggest, then we recommend doing a full detox, to help flush the chemicals from the vaccines out of their systems.

We have a couple of detox kits that will help.

Our primary recommendation would be the Mega Detox Kit, which contains a 4oz bottle of Immune Builder, a 4oz. bottle of Herbal Parasite Formula, and a tub of 150 capsules of MaxoTox, which is a really good, natural detox agent: http://www.KennelCoughTreatment.org/buy-kennel-cough-treatment#megadetox

Our secondary recommendation would be the Daily Maintenance Kit, which contains the two 4oz. bottles from the Mega Detox Kit, but it does not contain the MaxoTox: http://www.KennelCoughTreatment.org/buy-kennel-cough-treatment#dailymaintenance

On top of that, we give our dogs one dose of the products in the Daily Maintenance Kit every single day, to help keep them healthy.

In addition to these herbal products, we also believe in giving our dogs the very best dog food we can find, as most of the cheap, mass-market commercial dog food contains some very bad/dangerous ingredients – even the so-called premium brands. The only food we’ll give our dogs is Triumph (http://TriumphDogFood.com/), and we suggest you watch the video near the bottom of the home page to see what sort of junk the manufacturers put in their dog food – you’ll be surprised, shocked and probably angry!

Needless to say, we strongly encourage you not to get your dogs vaccinated again.

We hope both your dogs recover soon.

  12. Jean says:

My 4 yr old Havanese just got his Bordetella vaccine on Saturday, today- MOnday morning he won’t stop panting aND SCRATCHING HIMSELF. He is highly allergic to fleas, wheat etc. Could this be from his shot?

  13. Rae and Mark says:

    Jean,

We’re sorry to hear about your Havanese.

Sadly, it is very possible that the shots have caused these reactions, which are not uncommon, if you’ve read other people’s experiences on this page.

As we said in our response to Laurie, a few days ago, we recommend a detox to help get those chemicals out of his systgem.

  14. katy says:

My 2.5 year old Yorkie mix was due for a Bordetella and since I board her occasionally, I took her in for the shot Saturday morning. Almost exactly 12 hours later, she had 2 seizures, back to back, and she has never had anything like that before. It was horrible to watch and I love her too much to put her thru it again. The vet doesn’t think it was the shot, but I am convinced it was. All you have to do is read about a vet’s liability for the death of your pet (very small monetary amount) and it is clear that it is about the money they get from immunizations that drives the vet visits. No more Bordetellas.

  15. Rae and Mark says:

    Katy,

Thank you for sharing your experience, and we are, of course, very sorry to hear about your Yorkie.

There is no way, though, that Big Pharma (or most vets) will ever admit that vaccines cause problems such as this – there’s simply too much money at stake, as we’ve been telling people for years.

As to what we’d do in your situation, then we always recommend a full detox to help flush out the chemicals from the vaccines. (With our own dogs, we actually do this detox both before and after the rabies shots, which are the only shots we give them, and we only do those because it’s the law.) There are a couple of detox kits (the Daily Maintenance Kit and the Mega Detox Kit) on the following page that should help (not only now, but in the future too, to help keep your dog healthy): http://www.kennelcoughtreatment.org/buy-kennel-cough-treatment

Whatever you do, we hope your Yorkie is better soon.

  16. Connie says:

My 2 year old Maltese mixed had her first bordatella vaccine and 2 weeks later her booster for it and became sick with kennel cough approximately 1 month later that lasted 2 months…could it have been from the vaccines?

  17. Rae and Mark says:

    Connie,

In our experience, and based too on all of the horror stories posted by other readers, it’s entirely possible (or even probable) that your doggie got sick becuase of the vaccine.

What we usually recommend in such situation is a full detox (you’ll find a couple of detox kits – the Daily Maintenance Kit and the Mega Detox Kit here: http://www.KennelCoughTreatment.org/buy-kennel-cough-treatment#dailymaintenance), as these will help to flush out any residual chemicals from her system. (Actually, a detox is recommended once or twice a year anyway.)

We would also check the ingredients of the dog food you’re using – you really don’t want to see a dog food that is primarily based on corn, soy, wheat or chicken. (The one we use with our dogs is Triumph – see http://TriumphDogFood.com/ for details.)
